Explore The Never Ending History Of Galveston
Galveston History is Amazing!
Galveston has a long and rich history that dates back thousands of years before even Natives like the Karankawa lived on the island. Galveston was also at one time the second richest city per capita in the United States and served as the Capital of the Republic of Texas in 1836. Galveston was once dubbed the “Wall Street of the South” due to its banking industry and flourishing businesses on The Strand. Galveston even had the first post office, the first naval base, the first cotton compress, and many other firsts. Galveston is also the site of the worst storm to hit North America, killing over 6,000 people in the wake of the storm of 1900.
